A Punch Biopsy is a simple and commonly performed diagnostic skin procedure used to remove a small, circular section of skin for laboratory analysis. It helps dermatologists diagnose various skin conditions, including infections, inflammatory disorders, skin cancers, and autoimmune diseases.
The procedure uses a special, sharp, circular blade (punch tool) to extract a full-thickness skin sample, including the epidermis, dermis, and sometimes subcutaneous fat. The sample is then sent to a lab for microscopic examination.
The area is first cleansed and numbed with a local anesthetic.
A cylindrical punch tool is pressed and rotated into the skin to obtain the sample.
The wound is either left to heal naturally or closed with a small stitch, depending on its size.
A sterile dressing is applied, and basic aftercare instructions are provided.
The procedure is quick, usually completed in 10–15 minutes, and is done in an outpatient setting.
