A keloid is an overgrowth of scar tissue that forms at the site of an injury or incision. Unlike regular scars, keloids extend beyond the wound’s original borders and can grow larger over time. Keloids can be raised, thick, and sometimes red or darker in color than the surrounding skin. They can occur anywhere on the body but are more common on areas like the chest, shoulders, earlobes, and upper back. Keloids are often associated with an abnormal healing response, where the body produces too much collagen during the wound-healing process.
